Jodi Picoult, the author of Picture Perfect, uses sentences with multiple clauses to describe a scene in detail or multiple actions a character is doing. I've noticed that the author starts many sentences with dependent clauses. The dependent clause give the reader further information or complimentary information about the main thought of the sentence. Every couple of sentences, the author uses a simple sentence in a paragraph with many complex or compound sentences. The complex sentences give a flowing, consistent feel, while the simple sentences are choppy, but signify that something important is happening. The syntax allows the reader to pick out the important details. For example the author says "There were two officers." which is a simple sentence. The next sentence after it begins so describe the officers, but the character is slammed against a car, so he can no longer see the officers. The author's syntax draws the reader's attention and makes them want to continue reading.
